CIM National Readership Study 2023

De Tijd | L’Echo increases reach by 5%

On Tuesday October 17, the new reach statistics from the CIM press study were published.

The business newspapers De Tijd | L’Echo saw their daily readership increase by 5% to an average of 511,700 readers. This growth is exceptional in a Belgian press market that is shrinking by an average of -4.3%.

As well as a strong daytime audience, Mediafin also reaches an impressive monthly audience of 1,994,300 Belgians over the age of 16 with its four titles De Tijd, L’Echo, Sabato and Netto | Mon Argent.

This demonstrates that the multimedia content strategy of De Tijd | L’Echo is yielding results. It’s evident that the appealing demographics of business decision-makers, investors, and affluent families are successfully navigating their way to the content of De Tijd | L’Echo through various channels. Whether it’s the quick morning updates via the podcasts of De Tijd | L’Echo, De 7 and Le Brief, or the comprehensive reporting in the newspaper, along with real-time news, updates, and analyses via the website and app. The content of De Tijd | L’Echo can be accessed at any time of the day through the preferred channel.

The growth of De Tijd | L’Echo is primarily driven by digital channels (web, app, video, and podcast), which collectively contribute to an additional 60% reach. Investing in digital channels in general, and podcasts in particular, leads to a further rejuvenation of the readership, with as much as 27.3% now being younger than 35 years old. This growth aligns with the increasing newspaper sales.

The strong growth of De Tijd | L’Echo is perfectly matched by its impressive sales figures. In 2022, De Tijd recorded 11% growth in paid sales (paper and digital) compared with 2021, making it the only newspaper to have grown in Flanders. L’Echo also experienced similar growth. Paid sales (paper and digital) of the French-language business newspaper grew by 6% (compared with 2021).
